JUMP TO A QUESTION
For the analytical mind, the concept of "trance" can seem abstract. However, the state of hypnosis is a measurable, physiological event involving specific shifts in brain wave frequency.
Hypnotherapy is not magic; it is the art of guiding you from one mental state to another to facilitate neuroplasticity—the brain's innate ability to rewire itself.
Beta State (14-30 Hz): The Waking Mind. This is your default state during the day: alert, logical, and analytical. It is where you solve problems, but it is also where stress, anxiety, and your "Critical Faculty" (the psychological barrier that rejects new ideas) are most active. You cannot effectively reprogramme deep-seated patterns here because the "guard is at the door."
Alpha State (8-14 Hz): The Bridge. As you close your eyes and relax, you enter Alpha. This is the state of light meditation, daydreaming, or "flow." The body relaxes, and the Critical Faculty begins to fade, opening the door to the subconscious.
Theta State (4-8 Hz): The Transformational State. This is the "sweet spot" of hypnotherapy. It is the brain state of deep meditation, REM sleep, and vivid visualisation. In Theta, the brain is highly plastic and receptive. Here, we can bypass the critical resistance of the conscious mind to update old, limiting beliefs with new, empowering strategies.
One of the biggest barriers to entry for Awakened Achievers is the misconception that hypnosis involves a loss of control. The reality is the opposite: it is a state of heightened focus and empowerment.
Myth: "I will lose control."
Fact: All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You remain the architect of your experience. A hypnotherapist is a facilitator, much like a navigator; you are the one driving. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, values, or moral code. You can open your eyes and end the session at any moment.
Myth: "I won't remember anything."
Fact: You are not asleep; you are in a state of focused hyper-awareness. Most clients remember everything that happens during a session, just as they would recall the details of a deep, engaging conversation.
Myth: "It’s mind control."
Fact: Hypnotherapy is a natural, scientifically studied state of mind. It is very similar to the "flow state" you enter when deeply absorbed in a book, a complex project, or when driving a familiar route ("highway hypnosis"). It is biology, not magic.
Myth: "I can't be hypnotised."
Fact: Hypnosis is a skill of focus. Research suggests that higher intelligence and the ability to concentrate often correlate with higher hypnotisability. If you can follow instructions and have an imagination, you can benefit from hypnosis.
Why choose hypnotherapy? We move beyond historical anecdotes to focus on modern, rigorous data. Below is a snapshot of current research highlighting the efficiency of working directly with the subconscious mind.
Anxiety & Stress
Meta-Analysis: A major 2019 review combining 17 trials found that the average participant treated with hypnosis achieved more anxiety reduction than about 79% of control participants (Valentine et al., 2019).
Physiological Impact: Hypnosis has been shown to support the reduction of serum cortisol (stress hormone) levels and improve Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a key marker of resilience (Fisch et al., 2020; Chen et al., 2017).
Gut Health (IBS)
Regulatory Endorsement: Gut-directed hypnotherapy is recognised by the UK's NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) Guidelines [CG61] as an effective treatment option for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) when pharmacological treatments have been unsuccessful.
Effectiveness: In a study of online gut-directed hypnotherapy, 92.3% of participants reported an improvement in overall IBS symptoms (Noble et al., 2022).
Sleep & Insomnia
Clinical Outcomes: A randomised trial endorsed by the North American Menopause Society found that a hypnosis intervention led to clinically meaningful improvements in sleep quality for over 80% of participants (Elkins et al., 2021).
Pain Management
Altering Perception: Science shows hypnosis doesn't just convince you to ignore pain; it can alter the way the brain processes pain signals. A comprehensive meta-analysis of 42 studies found that hypnosis is a highly efficacious intervention for alleviating clinical pain intensity (Milling et al., 2021).
Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Supportive Care: Chronic stress is a known contributor to high blood pressure. A 2022 pilot study observed that hypnotic relaxation techniques could lead to reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to a control group, supporting its use as a complementary approach (Upoyo et al., 2022).
While many clients seek hypnotherapy for specific symptoms—such as anxiety, burnout, or unwanted habits—these issues are often "smoke signals" indicating a deeper internal friction.
My philosophy is distinct: we may address the acute symptom to provide you with relief, but our primary aim is Core Healing—working towards resolving the root cause to support true alignment. Often, when the core friction is resolved, the symptoms naturally dissipate.
My practice frequently supports clients in exploring and working through the following friction points, helping to create a foundation for lasting change:
Reducing Stress & Anxiety: Often a signal of a hyper-active "survival mode" disconnected from your innate resilience. We aim to help you reconnect with your baseline state of safety and clarity, rather than just managing the panic.
Breaking Unwanted Habits: Compulsive behaviours (like smoking, vaping, or nail-biting) are often subconscious attempts to self-soothe or manage internal tension. We seek to address the root need, which can help the habit become redundant.
Boosting Confidence & Self-Esteem: Addressing the subconscious narratives that limit your potential and prevent you from stepping fully into your capabilities.
Deepening Self-Connection & Improving Relationships: By resolving internal conflicts, you can often engage more authentically and harmoniously with others.
Strengthening the Mind & Creating Good Habits: Aligning your daily actions with your deeper intentions to build sustainable, positive routines.
Executive Burnout & Enhancing Performance: A symptom of "energetic drag" caused by sustaining conflicting internal patterns over time. Our goal is to align your subconscious drivers to support the restoration of your natural vitality and capacity, enhancing personal or professional performance.
Overcoming Fears & Phobias: Working towards neutralising irrational fear responses that limit your freedom.
Improving Sleep: Working to restore natural sleep cycles by quieting the "racing mind" and exploring the root of the subconscious hyper-vigilance that prevents deep rest.
Note: Results vary from individual to individual. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process, and while these outcomes are common goals, no specific result can be guaranteed. Please feel free to enquire if your specific concern isn't listed.
Have a specific question before booking? While I do not offer unpaid discovery calls, if you feel the need to speak briefly before committing to the Foundation Session, you may request a paid 20-Minute Consultation (£45) via the booking page. This call is strictly for clarifying questions and is non-therapeutic. Alternatively, I am happy to answer specific questions via email to ensure we are a good fit. Please click here to get in touch via my contact form.
Common questions regarding the subjective experience of the session.
Is my session confidential? Absolutely. Your privacy is paramount. Everything discussed in our sessions is kept strictly confidential, adhering to professional ethical guidelines. The only rare exceptions are legal obligations to disclose (e.g., risk of harm to yourself or others). For full details on how your data is handled, please review my Privacy Notice.
How many sessions do you recommend? The number of sessions needed varies depending on your goals and individual response to hypnotherapy. Deep behavioural change is a process. While the Foundation Session often creates an immediate shift, lasting transformation of deep-seated patterns typically requires a series of sessions. Depending on your goals, this is typically 5 to 12 sessions (inclusive of the Foundation Session) with the aim of fully "locking in" transformations.
What does it actually feel like? Most people describe hypnosis as a pleasant state of deep, focused relaxation—similar to the feeling of "daydreaming" or the moments just before you fall asleep. You are not "knocked out"; you are simply physically relaxed while your mind remains sharp and focused.
What if I fall asleep during the session? This is very common (both in hypnotherapy and meditation). It often means you needed the rest, and the relief from the state of hypnotherapy is allowing this to happen! Because the subconscious mind is always listening (even during light sleep), the therapeutic suggestions can still be effective. If you drift too deep, I will aim to simply guide you back to the appropriate level of awareness. It is strongly recommended that you keep in mind not to book a session at a time where you know you will be exhausted and unable to keep a productive level of alertness.
How is this different from a hypnosis app? Apps offer generic, pre-recorded scripts. These sessions are live, bespoke therapeutic interaction. I calibrate the session in real-time based on your responses, body language (when video is possible), and specific emotional needs—something an app cannot do.
Do online sessions really work? Yes. Hypnotherapy relies on auditory guidance and focus, not physical touch. Online sessions allow you to be in your own safe, private environment, which often deepens the state of relaxation. We use secure video calls (Google Meet usually). If connectivity fails, the session can proceed effectively via audio-only.
For full operational details, please refer to the linked policy documents.
How do I prepare for my session? To get the most out of our work, you need a quiet space, a good internet connection, and headphones. Don't worry too much about noise you can't control (traffic, building works) as hypnotherapy can actually use sensory input to deepen the experience. However, interruptions from pets, people, calls, texts, etc., should be avoided. For the full checklist of technology and environment requirements, please read the Service Guidelines & Expectations page.
What is your cancellation policy? My practice operates on a strict schedule to ensure every client receives full attention. Please review the full cancellation and lateness policies in the Service Guidelines & Expectations page before booking.
24+ Hours Notice: You may reschedule at no cost. More notice is appreciated where possible.
Less than 24 Hours Notice: The full session fee is forfeited and non-refundable.
Lateness: If you are late by 15 minutes or more, the session is treated as a No-Show and cancelled to protect the integrity of the work. The full fee applies. Please note that if you are late (less than 15 minutes), the session will not be extended and will end at the scheduled time.
Is there an age limit? Yes. My hypnotherapy services are exclusively for individuals aged 18 and over.
Do I need a doctor's referral? You do not need a referral, but if you have any concerns at all you should consult a medical professional before having any hypnotherapy sessions. For your safety, certain conditions are contraindicated with hypnotherapy. Please review the Suitability and Contraindications sections in my Terms & Conditions.
